Jesus Fernandez – Featured Member

Posted on April 7th, 2010 in Uncategorized by Richard

We are featuring the work of Jesus Fernandez below, so check him out…

What inspires your work?

I like to provoke with my work, doing something that is not typical, doing, so to say, the opposite of what the commercial world wants.

H. R. Giger is an artist who influenced me in the past. He is a good example to illustrate this concept of “provocation.”

At their time the French Impressionists, the German expressionists, the group Die Brücke or Goya in his series “Disasters of War” also provoked with their work to break with classicism.

Of course, I do not think that I am a commercial artist, but often I have to do this kind of art just to sell.

On the other hand, as an art director and illustrator, I have constant contact with the advertising world in a way that also influences me because I constantly doing illustrations for advertising campaigns, for books, packaging, etc … But of course I am conscious of the commercial part of this work and can differentiate between a product and art coming from the soul.

Finally, comics and illustration are my most direct influences, with artists like Wrightson, Ashley Wood or Chichoni, among many, many illustrators.

What made you get into creating art?

Since I was a child, I used to draw and paint a lot. I believe the artist is always in constant search, and art is like a language to express himself and comunícate ideas to other people.

Have you been doing this for long?

As I said before, I started drawind and painting when I was a child. So, for how long? Almost my whole life.

What is your favourite piece by yourself?

I am looking for the reaction in the viewer. I find it boring when an artwork has no effect on the public. It is a kind of illustrative painting.

This particular work, called ” FLIES DON’T GET INTO A CLOSED MOUTH.  ” – it´s a typical spanish phrase. You can compare it to the english phrase „loose lips, sink ships“.

Guest Blog Post – Selling Tees

Posted on February 23rd, 2010 in Uncategorized by Richard

Making the leap to full-time artist was a scary, but was a long-anticipated step in my life-long art career.  When the economy started tanking a couple of years ago, I was laid off from both of my part time jobs and took that as a sign to finally “go for it”…do art full time!  I was exhibiting regularly at that point, and getting some freelance work, but given the rough financial times for everyone, sales were hard to come by.

passage

So, I decided to branch out my artwork to include lower-priced, marketable items.  I had already been selling my own line of greeting cards, which was doing well, so I expanded on that, which then lead towards the idea of T-shirts.  I vend at a lot of artistic events, such as art fairs, Wiccan fests, goth clubs, etc. and although people loved my original artwork, often they couldn’t afford an original or had no wall space for reproductions…so, with T-shirts they could WEAR my art!

Using a website like Artybuzz provides a great platform to sell t shirts to a wide audience that may not be reachable, or appropriate to sell to for your normal art sales. So it’s a nice opportunity that presents itself with Artybuzz.com. This has worked out pretty well so far and I would therefore recommend it to others.
I often deal with very specific tastes at the events I do so I keep the subject matter consistent with what people want, which is perfect as it’s the focus of much of my artwork.  But I also found that there are tons of animal lovers out there from all walks of life, so my “Petoons”, (c)L.Curtis, have been big sellers. Feel free to email me at forestwalker333@hotmail.com with any questions.

Thanks for reading!

Banish Your Inner Critic

Posted on February 15th, 2010 in Uncategorized by Richard

This is a guest post by Jane Heinrichs.

Creating art can be an intimidating practice.  What we artists see in our imaginations often isn’t what ends up on the paper or canvas.  Why is it so hard to translate those ephemeral ideas into reality?  When we feel that we fall short of our dreams we become incredibly critical of ourselves.

Those critical voices in our heads are more vicious than anything a client, dealer, friend, or art lover will ever say to you.  Our “inner critics” have intimate knowledge of our weakest spots.  They can zero in on those vulnerable areas and cause the greatest emotional damage.

Sometimes when your inner critic shouts its loudest, you simply have to back off and do something else.  Go get some exercise.  Try a change of scenery. See a movie in a new genre.  Go to a new café in an area of town you’ve never been.  Work your right brain, do something logical and linear.  You may find that once you’ve cleared the cobwebs you can return to your artwork with fresh eyes.  The inner critic will have been distracted, and … wonder of wonders … you realize your work isn’t half bad. In fact, it’s pretty good!

Sometimes you must hold your inner anguish in your arms and rock yourself to sleep.  When you are exhausted, your inner critic is usually the fiercest.  Put on some lovely music to sooth your starved and abandoned heart.  After the rest, your heart will immediately lift.  As Shakespeare said, “Self love, my liege, is not so vile a sin as self-neglecting.”

Sark explained in her book “Make your Creative Dreams Real” that she banished her inner critic to Madagascar on an expedition to search for rare lemurs.  Sometimes a little humour can be the perfect antidote to an attack of self-criticism.

Next time your inner critic strikes with vengeance, don’t let it get you down.  Do something else, take a rest, or find the humour in the moment.  Your heart will feel lighter in no time.

Drita Harris – Featured Artist

Posted on February 8th, 2010 in Uncategorized by Richard

Today we are featuring the work of Drita Harris, an artist who works with glass. We asked her a few questions:

What inspires your art?
My inspiration comes from all the colors that are reflected through the glass I use. My favorite glass to work with is dichroic glass, when it shines in the sun, it sparkles and reflects colors that seem to be lit from the inside out.

What do you love most about art?
When I work with glass and create my pieces, I love the feeling of drifting off into a creating mode and don’t realize the time spent or the world around me. When the process is complete and I take a finished piece out of my kiln, the brilliant colors that come through seem to always amaze me!

What do you hope to achieve in the future?
I would like to expand my skills and create unique pieces with different techniques that I can apply to my glass. I am also thinking about using PMC clay to create my own unique charms to attach to my pendants.

What do you want to get out of Artybuzz?
I would like to network with other artists and show my art through Artybuzz to a group that I might otherwise never be exposed to.

Artsbowl.com – A new partnership for Artybuzz

Posted on February 4th, 2010 in Uncategorized by Richard

Artybuzz has teamed up with a new partner: artsbowl.com, an online creative courses hub where creative individuals can promote or find art classes, workshops and courses, share their experiences of participating in arts courses and belong to a creative learning community.

artsbowl_logo_full_whitebg

The Artsbowl website artsbowl.com is the brainchild of Daniel Lingham, a sculptor with an entrepreneurial flair.  Daniel explains how the idea came about after many hours spent promoting his own stone sculpting workshops.  “I realised there was a need for an online platform where small independent course providers and the more established arts organisations could promote their creative courses to far greater effect than simply having their own individual website – and decided to do something about it”.

Artsbowl is a platform for anyone providing a creative course,  arts class or arts based workshop to list their activity, share experiences and tips, create blogs and message others.  It also provides opportunities for people attending the amazing variety of classes to share and discuss the workshops or classes they have been on.

Creative courses on Artsbowl come in a variety of forms, ranging from culinary skills, to poetry, dancing to jewellery design, fashion, painting, sculpting, creative writing and much more.  Artsbowl’s ethos is to embrace creative learning in all of these fields and aims to attract a large community of creative individuals and organisations.

Like Artybuzz, Artsbowl operates on an international scale.  “We hope that artsbowl will enable people of all ages and abilities from around the world to find a creative outlet that is just right for them” says Daniel.  “People look for creative activities for various reasons, ranging from personal enrichment, to searching for an alternative career path.  You can find classes that meet any of these needs on artsbowl” he added.

You will also find all sorts of interesting blogs and articles on a range of topics related to creativity on the site.  If you are passionate about your artistic pursuits, you will be more than welcome to add your own blogs or comments on artsbowl.

Take a look at artsbowl.com, visit their Facebook page, or find them on Twitter.
